Seaweed is one of Earth’s most nutrient-dense foods, full of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to be healthy. Its delicious umami taste makes it a pleasure to eat. As pioneers in seaweed aquaculture, Ocean’s Balance has developed zero-input farming that uses no arable land, no fresh water and no fertilizers. In fact, studies have shown that seaweed cultivation contributes to the reduction of ocean acidification, helping to maintain the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

THE NEW SUPERFOOD
What makes a food “super”? If it delivers the maximum amount of nutrition with a minimum of calories. Seaweed is one of the most nutritionally dense plants on the planet and also the most abundant source of minerals in the plant kingdom as it has access to all the nutrients in the ocean. It is considered especially beneficial for health and well-being. In addition to be being a natural source of iodine, which is necessary for regulating metabolism, seaweed is also a natural source of magnesium, calcium, iron and essential vitamins such as C and K. Low in calories, carbohydrates and fat, it's also gluten free. What's not to love?
All of our products are made from seaweed grown in the Gulf of Maine, a body of water renowned for its nutrient-rich, cold waters, which make for ideal growing conditions. Maine is quickly becoming the largest seaweed producer of seaweeds in the United States.
Seaweed cultivation is a zero-input practice. It requires no arable land, no fertilizers, no extra food, and no fresh water. Growing seaweed ensures that the natural richness of the Maine coast is preserved, and that fresh water supplies are not diminished.
PROTECTS THE OCEAN
WOMEN TAKE NOTE
Seaweed is especially high in calcium, with ten times more in content than milk. In addition to its rich iron and potassium content, it is also high in folate, from which folic acid is made. All of these minerals are important to maintaining a healthy body.
SAVES WATER, TOO
It might seem obvious to mention, but seaweed lives in the ocean, and needs no fresh water to grow. This is a crucial factor to consider as the planet is subjected to more frequent instances of fresh water shortages.
Seaweed also acts as a natural filter for the ocean, absorbing the nutrients it needs to thrive, such as phosphorous and nitrogen. It also sequesters carbon as it grows, resulting in the crystal clear water for which Maine is famous.
SUPPORTS THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Seaweed farming is an alternative means of income for coastal fishermen, who struggle with collapsed fish stocks and lean times during the winter. Seaweed processing represents employment opportunities for "new Mainers", the immigrant communities of Maine that represent the future of state's workforce, one of the oldest in the country.
